Back to Birth: Reclaiming Routine and Rhythm in Pregnancy
September is often a month of getting back into routines. Whether it’s school starting again, holidays ending, or just a natural shift as the seasons change, it can feel like a bit of a reset. And that can be a really good thing during pregnancy.
If things have felt a bit all over the place lately, you're definitely not alone. The summer months can bring a change in pace, travel, childcare juggle, or just less structure overall. But as we head into autumn, it's a great time to think about how to bring in more rhythm, especially when it comes to preparing for birth.
Why rhythm matters in pregnancy
Pregnancy is a time of constant change, physically, mentally and emotionally. Having even a simple routine can help you feel more grounded and prepared. It doesn’t have to be rigid or overwhelming, it’s more about finding what supports you.
A few benefits of having a steady routine in pregnancy:
Helps reduce stress and anxiety
Supports better sleep
Makes space for birth preparation tools to really land
Builds confidence and a sense of calm
3 simple ways to bring in rhythm this September
1. Make time for daily relaxation
Whether it’s 10 minutes in the morning or right before bed, building a short daily habit like listening to a hypnobirthing track, doing some calm breathing, or just lying down with your hands on your bump can make a big difference. Repetition is what helps these tools stick, and work when you need them most.
2. Create a weekly focus
Use each week to build up part of your birth toolkit. For example:
One week focus on breathing techniques
The next week, dive into birth positions and movement
Another week, spend time talking to your birth partner about your preferences
This helps break things down into manageable chunks and avoids the overwhelm of doing it all at once.
3. Set up small habits around connection
Even something as simple as playing your favourite music while prepping dinner or going for a regular walk can become part of your rhythm. If you’re bonding with your baby at the same time, even better. You don’t need to add more stuff to your plate, it’s more about being intentional with what you’re already doing.
If you’ve got older kids…
This time of year can be emotional. My own child is starting school this September, so I know how full-on the transition can feel. If you’ve already got little ones at home, the start of the school year might bring some relief, but it can also stir up a lot.
Be kind to yourself. And remember, it’s okay if your routines look a bit messy right now. You’re doing a lot and preparing for birth is one part of that.
This month is a great time to refocus
If your baby is due later this year or early next, this is the perfect time to start (or restart) your birth preparation. Hypnobirthing works best when it becomes part of your rhythm, something you practise little and often, rather than something you try to learn all at once.
And if you’re ready to start, or need a bit of a reset, I’ve got classes and support to help you do just that.
